Queensland tours.

Reef, rainforest, and everything in between, handpicked Queensland tours from local operators, book directly.

Why Queensland?

Queensland runs from the ancient Daintree Rainforest, the oldest tropical rainforest on Earth, over 180 million years old to the outer Great Barrier Reef, 70km offshore, where visibility drops to 20 metres and coral walls fall away into the deep.

In between: Kuranda on a 100-year-old scenic railway, Green Island in under an hour from Cairns, and Cooktown by 4WD on the original overland track.

This is what Aussies do.

Got questions? We have some answers.

Without question. Far North Queensland is the only place on Earth where two UNESCO World Heritage sites sit side by side at the same shoreline. The Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest are separated by a single coastal road north of Cairns, and in between sit the Atherton Tablelands, Fitzroy Island, Kuranda and the Cassowary Coast. Most visitors arrive expecting two or three days and leave wishing they had booked two weeks. The region rewards people who slow down, ask locals, and resist the urge to fit everything into one coach tour.

Yes, honestly and with realistic expectations. The reef has experienced significant bleaching events in consecutive summers and some sections are under serious pressure. That is the truth and it is worth knowing before you go. What is also true is that large sections of the outer reef north of Cairns remain in strong condition, the marine life is still extraordinary, and seeing it now with a responsible operator matters more than not seeing it at all. Choosing a small group tour with guides who know these waters is the difference between a meaningful day and a crowded pontoon experience. Have a look at what is available through the Great Barrier Reef tours page on Aussie Loop and read the operator notes before booking.

April to October is the dry season and the most comfortable window. Temperatures run between 22 and 28 degrees, humidity drops, reef visibility is at its best and every walking track is open. November to March is the wet season — heavy rainfall, high humidity, stinger season on the beaches and some roads north of the Daintree River become impassable. That said, the rainforest during the wet is unlike anything else. The waterfalls in the Daintree and Cape Tribulation are at full roar, the forest turns an almost impossible shade of green, and the crowds disappear. It requires more flexibility but rewards the traveller who is up for it.

Stinger season in Tropical North Queensland runs from around November through to May, peaking in January and February. Box jellyfish and Irukandji jellyfish are present in coastal and reef waters during this window. The short answer on reef tours is: they operate year round and stinger season does not shut them down. What changes is the gear. During stinger season every snorkeller gets a full body lycra stinger suit as standard. Any operator worth booking with hands these out without being asked. Outside stinger season suits are still available and many people wear them for sun protection anyway. The operators listed through Cairns tours on Aussie Loop all run small groups and include full safety briefings before anyone gets in the water.

Saltwater crocodiles are present in rivers, estuaries and some coastal beaches throughout Tropical North Queensland from Rockhampton north to Cape York. They are most active between September and April. The rule is simple: never swim in rivers, creeks, lagoons or unfamiliar coastal water without specific local advice confirming it is safe. Always read crocodile warning signs. The open ocean on a guided reef tour is a different situation entirely and is safe for snorkelling and swimming. Patrolled beach areas in Cairns have stinger nets during stinger season. Guides on tours through Daintree and Cape Tribulation are across all of this and will tell you exactly where you can and cannot go in the water.

More than most people expect. The southern cassowary crosses the road at dawn between Mossman and Cape Tribulation and is genuinely one of the most startling wildlife encounters in Australia. Lumholtz's tree kangaroos live in the forest patches of the Atherton Tablelands and are reliably spotted on the right tour. Boyd's forest dragons, spotted tail quolls and the musky rat kangaroo — the world's smallest — are all in the Wet Tropics. On the reef: sea turtles, reef sharks, manta rays and humpback whales offshore from June to October. Over 400 bird species in the rainforest alone. For tablelands wildlife, have a look at the Atherton Tablelands tours on Aussie Loop. For a dedicated birdwatching experience check out the Cairns to Tablelands Birdwatching Tour.

The Daintree is the oldest surviving tropical rainforest on Earth at around 180 million years old, which means it predates the Amazon by roughly 80 million years. It runs from the mountains down to the Coral Sea in an unbroken stretch and meets the Great Barrier Reef at Cape Tribulation — nowhere else on Earth does a World Heritage rainforest and a World Heritage reef share the same shoreline. Aboriginal Kuku Yalanji people have lived in and cared for this country for over 50,000 years. The most meaningful way to experience it is with a cultural operator who has that knowledge. A good starting point is the Daintree Dreaming Aboriginal Cultural Adventure listed on Aussie Loop.

The Atherton Tablelands grow some of the best tropical produce in Australia at altitude — mangoes, avocados, lychees, macadamia nuts and coffee that punches well above its reputation. Gallo Dairyland is worth stopping at. Along the coast, fresh barramundi and coral trout are staples. The Daintree Ice Cream Company near Cape Tribulation makes single-flavour scoops from whatever fruit is ripe that day and is one of those stops people talk about for years. Port Douglas has strong dining for a town its size. For a guided taste of the tablelands check out the Taste of the Tablelands Tour or the Atherton Tablelands Food and Wine Adventure on Aussie Loop.

Not if you book smart. Cairns is very well served by guided tours to every major destination in the region. The reef, the Daintree, Kuranda, the Atherton Tablelands and Fitzroy Island are all accessible without a rental car. North of the Daintree River ferry crossing requires a 4WD for self-drivers on some tracks. If you are coming from Port Douglas, guided departures cover most of the same ground. Browse what departs from Port Douglas on Aussie Loop if that is your base. If you do hire a car, the drive from Cairns north through Mossman to Cape Tribulation via the Daintree ferry is genuinely one of the best road trips in Queensland and worth the effort.

The Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree and Cape Tribulation, the Atherton Tablelands and Kuranda are the four big ones. Each is a full day and each is genuinely different from the others — reef, ancient rainforest, high altitude farmland and mountain village are not experiences you can combine into one rush. Fitzroy Island is a solid half day if you want something quieter than the main reef pontoon operators. For something most visitors skip entirely, the Cassowary Coast Goondoi Culture Experience is one of the most distinctive days out from Cairns on Aussie Loop. Also worth considering: the Paronella Park Experience if you have not heard of it yet.

Kuranda is a rainforest village in the mountains 25km northwest of Cairns, and the journey there is half the point. The Kuranda Scenic Railway is a 100-year-old heritage train that winds through rainforest gorges, over the Barron Falls and through hand-built tunnels — it is one of the great Australian train journeys and feels nothing like a tourist attraction. The Skyrail Rainforest Cableway runs 7.5km above the rainforest canopy and lets you look down into the tree tops. Most people do one route up and the other back down. The village itself has markets, wildlife parks and cultural experiences. Have a look at the Kuranda tours on Aussie Loop for the combinations that work best depending on where you are staying.

Three days gives you the reef and one other destination done properly. Five days lets you cover the Daintree and the Atherton Tablelands without the rushed feeling that makes both worse. A week gives you Fitzroy Island, the Cassowary Coast and time to actually sit in Cape Tribulation for a night and hear what the forest sounds like after dark. Most people who spend a week wish they had booked ten days. If you want help thinking through what to do with your time, the Queensland tours page on Aussie Loop is organised by destination so you can see what is available in each area before you lock anything in. Locals always say: arrive with fewer plans than you think you need and give yourself room to follow a tip-off.
