Quick answer

The best family reef tour from Cairns comes down to how old your kids are. With toddlers or anyone nervous on boats, the Green Island Full Day Tour is the easy win: wade in from the beach, a lifeguard on the northern beach and fares from A$156. For a first outer reef day with mixed ages, Reef Magic gives you five hours on a stable pontoon with a sheltered lagoon and an infant enclosure. Sunlover is the one kids talk about afterwards, thanks to a 30 metre waterslide and an island afternoon. Confident swimmers who want a day built around snorkelling should look at Evolution, which visits two outer reef sites with snorkel supervisors in the water. All four welcome every age, and infants aged 0 to 3 travel free.

How to choose a family reef tour by your kids’ ages

Babies and toddlers (0 to 3)

Every tour here lets infants ride free, but not every family reef tour suits a toddler. The outer reef trips run eight to nine hours with about 90 minutes on open water each way. Green Island is gentler. The air conditioned Big Cat stays open all day as your base for naps, shade and snacks, the vessels are pram friendly and the island boardwalks suit wheels. If a whole day is a stretch, the Green Island half day tour is easier still.

Set on the outer reef with a little one? Reef Magic is the pick. The pontoon has an infant enclosure, and Reef Magic III has a baby change room.

Little kids (4 to 7)

At this age, a pontoon based family reef tour earns its keep. Kids can dip in, climb out, warm up and go again, and there’s plenty to see without swimming at all. Reef Magic’s lagoon sits around 4 to 5 metres deep, and the observatory, semi submersible and glass bottom boat show them the coral when they’ve had enough of the water. Sunlover adds an enclosed ocean pool and the waterslide, which is a big motivator for this age group. On Green Island, the beginner Snorkel Experience tour (an extra) starts from age 6 and begins with practice in shallow water.

Older kids and teens (8 and up)

Kids who are happy in the water get the most out of Evolution, the most snorkelling focused family reef tour of the four. It visits two outer reef sites for about five hours on the reef, and the crew run instruction for first timers with supervisors in the water. Teens aged 12 and over can add an introductory scuba dive. Reef Magic suits this age too if you want the pontoon extras, with optional scuba, helmet diving and a guided snorkel tour.

Our rule of thumb: if anyone in the family is under 4 or gets seasick, start with Green Island. If everyone is happy on a boat for 90 minutes, a family reef tour to the outer reef is worth the extra travel.

Snorkel support on each family reef tour

Green Island Full Day Tour

Every fare includes a free choice of snorkel gear (with a lycra stinger suit and flotation vest) or a glass bottom boat tour, so non swimmers aren’t paying for gear they won’t use. You snorkel straight off the beach, where green turtles are a common sighting, and a lifeguard is on duty in the flagged area at the northern beach. There’s a snorkelling and safety presentation on the way out, plus optional guided tours: the Snorkel Experience for beginners and the Snorkel Safari for stronger swimmers.

Reef Magic Pontoon

Reef Magic includes snorkel gear, flotation in adult and child sizes, wetsuits and lycra stinger suits. The lagoon is sheltered and shallow, which suits first time snorkellers of any age, and a marine biology talk on the way out tells the kids what to look for. A guided snorkel tour is available as an extra. Children under 16 need adult supervision at all times.

Sunlover Reef and Fitzroy Island

At Moore Reef you get snorkel gear, a lycra suit and a free buoyancy vest, plus a kids snorkel training area, an enclosed ocean pool for smaller children, the semi submersible, a glass bottom boat and an underwater observatory. Lifeguards are on duty all day. A marine biologist guided snorkel tour is an optional extra, open to kids from age 5 and to non swimmers. Children under 12 must be directly supervised by an adult. After lunch at Zephyrs on Fitzroy Island, the kids can swim at Welcome Bay, so pack reef shoes for the coral beaches.

Evolution Outer Reef Cruise

Evolution is a 35 metre superyacht rather than a pontoon, so the day is about snorkelling the open reef. Gear, a lycra sun suit and snorkel instruction are included, and flotation devices and snorkel supervisors in the water help nervous swimmers. A semi submersible tour is available as an extra for anyone who wants to stay dry. Wetsuits can be hired on board for $10.

FAQs

What is the best family reef tour from Cairns for toddlers?

The Green Island Full Day Tour is the easiest family reef tour with toddlers. Under 4s travel free, the vessels are pram friendly, you can wade in from the beach and the air conditioned Big Cat is your base all day. For the outer reef, Reef Magic has an infant enclosure on its pontoon.

Which family reef tour from Cairns gives the most snorkelling time?

Reef Magic and Evolution both give you about five hours on the reef. Reef Magic spends it all at one pontoon with a sheltered lagoon, while Evolution splits it across two outer reef sites. Sunlover has about two and a half hours at the reef because the afternoon is spent on Fitzroy Island.

How old do kids need to be for a family reef tour?

There’s no minimum age on any of these four tours, and infants aged 0 to 3 travel free. Whether a child snorkels comes down to how comfortable they are in the water, and flotation is supplied. Some extras have age limits: the beginner Snorkel Experience on Green Island starts at 6, and introductory scuba on Evolution starts at 12.

Do kids need to swim on a Great Barrier Reef tour with the family?

No. Flotation is supplied on all four tours, and the glass bottom boats, semi submersibles and underwater observatories on Reef Magic and Sunlover let non swimmers see coral without getting wet. On Green Island, you can swap the snorkel gear for a glass bottom boat tour at no extra cost.

How much does a family reef tour from Cairns cost?

Adult fares on Aussie Loop start from A$156 on Green Island and run to A$360 for Reef Magic, with Evolution from A$275 and Sunlover from A$337. Children pay a child fare from age 4 and under 4s are free. Lunch, transfers, levies and extras can add to the total, so check the tour page for your date.

Is the outer reef or Green Island better for a family reef tour?

The outer reef has clearer water and more coral, so it’s the better pick when everyone is happy on a boat for about 90 minutes each way. Green Island is better with toddlers, prams or anyone prone to seasickness, because the crossing is shorter and you snorkel from the beach.

What happens to a family reef tour if the weather is bad?

All four operators move you to another day if they cancel for weather. Green Island and Reef Magic refund in full if a new date doesn’t work, Sunlover offers another date, a different itinerary or a refund, and Evolution rebooks you on the next available departure. Check each tour page for its cancellation terms.
