Traditional Custodians of the Dyirribarra Bagirbarra people welcome you to Country and share the Dreamtime story of Goondoi the cassowary, weaving, language, bush foods and medicines. It's a quiet, personal exchange rather than a performance. For other ways to connect with culture up north, see the Daintree Dreaming Aboriginal cultural adventure.

Children aged 4 to 12 pay the child rate, and infants under 4 travel free on a guardian's lap. The day is rated easy to moderate, with about 1 to 2 km of walking in total on mostly flat, formed paths.

Lunch of tropical fruit, sandwiches and cold drinks is served at Goondoi, followed by afternoon tea later in the day. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten free and other dietary needs can be catered for if you mention them when booking.

Sightings at Etty Bay are common, especially in the dry season, but wild animals are never guaranteed. Your guide knows where to look and will share plenty of cassowary facts either way.

A hat, camera, clean walking shoes, a refillable water bottle, swimmers and a towel, plus a cardigan from May to September. Please skip insect repellent and chemical sunscreen before swimming, and check our guide to small group tours in Australia for more on travelling this way.

More about this tour.

This Cassowary Coast day from Cairns is built around a conversation, not a show. Tropic Tours partners with Goondoi Culture Tours so you can sit with Traditional Custodians of the Dyirribarra Bagirbarra people on their Country near Innisfail, then spend the rest of the day swimming at waterfalls and walking rainforest beaches.Your guide collects you from the Northern Beaches at 8:30am or Cairns at 9:00am and heads south to Wooroonooran National Park. A guided rainforest walk brings you to Josephine Falls, fed by water from Queensland's highest peak, with time for a swim. After a drive through Innisfail's Art Deco streets, you reach Goondoi for a Welcome to Country, the Dreamtime story of Goondoi the cassowary, weaving, language, and a walk through the wetlands learning about bush foods, medicines and sacred trees. Lunch of tropical fruit, sandwiches and cold drinks is shared here. The afternoon brings Etty Bay, a palm fringed beach where Southern Cassowaries are often seen, then a last swim at Babinda Boulders, conditions permitting, with afternoon tea before the drive home. Prefer Paronella Park's castle ruins and light show? Book the Paronella Park experience from Cairns, or read our guide to Aboriginal experiences in Australia.Explore the itinerary, check availability before the November to February wet season break, then book your place in the group.
