You meet at the High and Wild office inside the Blue Mountains YHA, 207 Katoomba Street, Katoomba, about five minutes' walk from Katoomba station. The day runs from about 7am to 5pm, with transport to the canyons and back included.

Katoomba is about two hours by car or train from Sydney, and early trains from Central arrive after the 7am start, so most people stay in Katoomba the night before. Drivers get free all day parking on Edwards Street beside the office.

Trips run in light rain, and your guides make the final call on the morning because forecasts can change fast in the mountains. If High and Wild cancels for bad weather or bushfire risk, you can take a full refund or a free reschedule.

Cancel or change your date with at least 48 hours' notice and a $45 per person admin fee applies; with less notice, the full price is charged. For groups of three or more and private bookings the cutoff is 14 days, and there's no refund if you arrive late and the trip has already left.

The minimum age for canyoning is 14, and under 18s need a waiver signed by a parent or guardian. If you're pregnant or have a medical condition, call High and Wild on (02) 4782 6224 before booking to talk it through.

This trip is graded moderate to hard, with about 1 hour 45 minutes of bushwalking, an uphill hour to finish, and plenty of jumps, slides and tunnel swims. Your wetsuit and backpack keep you buoyant, but call the office before booking if you're not confident in the water.

Wear swimwear under shorts or light pants, a top that covers your shoulders and grippy running shoes that can get wet. Bring a fleece jacket, a water bottle, any medication and dry clothes to leave at the office; our Australia packing list covers the rest of your trip.

Yes, lunch is included and eaten at the start of Rocky Creek. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten free and coeliac options are available, and you choose yours when you book.

Trips run from November to March, because these canyons are cold and warm summer days make all that swimming far more enjoyable. Our guide to the best time to visit the Blue Mountains helps you match the rest of your trip to the season.

More about this tour.

Most canyon trips give you one canyon. This one gives you two, and they could not be more different. Twister is short, cold and playful, a chain of eight pools you jump into, swim across and slide out of. Rocky Creek is long and deep, a slot in Wollemi National Park near Newnes where the walls rise more than 50 metres over your head.Your day starts at the High and Wild office on Katoomba Street, where the team has been guiding adventures since 1989. From there it's a drive out to the canyons, a walk of about 15 minutes and a wetsuit fitting at the edge of Twister. Then you're in: jump, swim, slide, repeat, eight times over.Out of Twister, you follow a trail for about 30 minutes through a valley thick with tree ferns to the start of Rocky Creek, where lunch is waiting. The afternoon is tunnel swims, waterfall scrambles and rock slides until the canyon opens into sunshine. You then work your way back through the canyon and finish with a steady uphill walk of about an hour to the vehicles. It's graded moderate to hard and runs from November to March, when warm days make the chilly water feel like a reward rather than a test. Groups top out at 10, so your guide knows your name well before the last jump. If anyone in your crew would rather keep their feet dry, the Blue Mountains Wildlife and Scenic World day tour covers the big lookouts and the Scenic Railway, and our guide to the best time to visit the Blue Mountains helps you plan the rest of your stay.Explore the day, then check availability for your summer date.
