What could be better?

Honestly, not much. Food tastings lean on variety over volume, so don't skip lunch, and the included drinks don't cover spirits.

You can choose between two meeting points: outside the Queen Victoria Building in the city centre, or 302 Crown St in Surry Hills. Every route finishes near a train station (Wynyard on Tuesdays, Circular Quay on Thursdays, Central on Fridays and Saturdays), so getting home is easy.

Tours depart at 6:30pm and wrap up around 10pm, and your confirmed meeting point and start time are on your booking confirmation. Arrive a few minutes early, as anyone who turns up after the group has left is treated as a no show and isn't refunded.

Your ticket covers the guided night, reservations at 3 to 4 small or hidden bars, your first drink (beer or wine), group photos and a map of recommendations. Budget at least $40 extra for beer and wine, or $60 plus if you plan to order cocktails.

There's no pressure to drink, and non drinkers are welcome. Food isn't included, so eat before the tour; snacks or small plates are usually available at the first or second bar, but don't expect a full meal.

You can cancel for free up to 24 hours before your tour, with no refunds inside 24 hours or for no shows. Tours run in all weather, so pack an umbrella if rain is forecast; if severe weather or another event stops the tour, the operator will offer an alternative or a refund.

Every guest must be 18 or over and bring photo ID, either a passport or a driver licence (overseas licences are fine). Most guests are in their 20s, 30s and 40s, but all adult ages join in.

The Tuesday route can be set up for wheelchair users with advance notice, but the Thursday, Friday and Saturday routes include bars in older buildings reached only by stairs. Each night covers about 2km with some hills and stairs, around 30 minutes of walking in total.

Yes, it's built for it. Groups are capped at 12 and mix locals with travellers, which is exactly why small group tours suit solo explorers; for 7 or more people, book a private group instead.

  • Friday: the southern end of the city centre, including the Chinatown night market and Thaitown, finishing near Central station.
  • Saturday: Surry Hills and Darlinghurst, the local favourite for a proper weekend night, finishing near Central station.
